Record of a spaceborn few review7/6/2023 This also made it a little hard to bond with all the different characters and to hold on to one specific narrative anchor. The familiarity just wasn’t there yet, and it was more difficult and took more time to establish as the book hops between the different characters’ perspectives from chapter to chapter, which was especially challenging whenever the chapters were on the shorter side. The book sets up and follows 5 different central characters, all of which live and operate within their own distinctive bubbles in the beginning, it’s a little confusing, mostly because I had trouble keeping up with everyone’s different backgrounds, the people in their lives, where everybody is at, and what their narratives each serve. The relative “slice-of-life” nature of the Wayfarers series continues with its third entry, Record of a Spaceborn Few, and this time around, zooms in on and explores different, exclusively human characters, their stories, embedment into and relation to Exodan culture (a particular set of human culture with its own traditions, philosophies, politics, etc., that has been established in the series early on), and their at least somewhat interwoven paths.

Our review: Parents say ( 1 ): Kids say ( 10 ): The Edge may refer to the part of the world where the story takes place, but it also describes the part of the seat where your child will breathlessly linger. The neapolitan quartet7/5/2023 “Falsehoods protect us, mitigate suffering, allow us to avoid the terrifying moment of serious reflection, they dilute the horrors of our time, they even save us from ourselves.” For Ferrante, the falsehoods that people tell one another and themselves in everyday life- I am happy I love my wife I didn’t know what I was doing-are “lovely tales,” or “petty lies.” At moments when guilt and shame threaten our conscience, when they shake our deepest beliefs about who we are, petty lies stop us from looking too closely at ourselves. “T o tolerate existence, we lie, and we lie above all to ourselves,” Elena Ferrante observed in a 2002 interview. Mirror in the Sky by Aditi Khorana7/5/2023 The complexity of the folklore and its romantic twists will engage fantasy readers on many levels.Īfter surviving a suicide attempt, a fragile teen isn't sure she can endure without cutting herself. The rich, beautiful worldbuilding and thought-provoking questions on the power of experience, stories, and fate-and how they weave together-mitigate the occasional uneven pacing and jumps in Amrita’s first-person narration. Along the way, ancient tales of magic, mythical entities, and everlasting love provide clues to the paths they must take. Together, these two strong young women rely on their talents and each other as they search for a way to restore peace to the land, develop their true identities, and find the Library of All Things in order to access the stories of their lives and of loved ones. When Sikander “gifts” the teen an enslaved oracle named Thala, who warns her of Sikander’s scheme to overtake Shalingar, Amrita flees for her life, rescuing Thala in the process. Now betrothed to Sikander, the ruthless dictator of Macedon, Amrita loathes the prospect of becoming part of his harem. Raised in Shalingar, Princess Amrita has known a father who serves as a kind protector of his people, as well as friendship and first love through Arjun, who was raised alongside her in the royal palace, but never her mother. Indian folklore drives the fate of a princess and her homeland. I wanted to read this story, because I was promised scary supernatural activities, not an old man who doesn't believe in mediums and shoves his opinion in everyone's face via page-long monologues. There are also a huge amount of chapters in the POV of an sceptic in regards to all things paranormal which annoyed me. Then there are some clichéd characters like the hot blond woman to have sex with, the bad cop who's powerless in the face of circumstancial evidence and riles vigilantes up to kill the pedophile etc. We get told what Oliver saw or didn't see, but we're never present when the cool stuff happens or only witness it through the eyes of an bystander like his girlfriend. This is the prefered method throughout the book. We get told there was just the ghost of an abused woman standing next to the bed and vanishing again and how shaken Oliver feels now, because that apparently had happened, but we get thrown into the scene long after the fact. Everything happens off-camera, so to say.Įxample: Imagine waking up to the gory sight of a murdered woman talking to you and coming closer. Granted, the MC has paranormal powers and sees ghosts and visions, but as reader we never get to experience those. His obsession with denouncing Sangster as a fake leads to the psychic losing his wife and family, and his income from his shows. I'm honestly puzzled looking at all the rave reviews and ratings. |
